Exponential and variance inequalities in dynamical systems.
Speaker:Prof. Pierre Collet (Ecole Polytechnique-CNRS, Physique Theorique)
Abstract:I will briefly review the notions of exponential and variance inequalities which can be used to control fluctuations of obervables which are not necessarily ergodic sums. I will describe some applications to concentration and fluctuation estimates. I will also review the various techniques which have been used up to now to prove these inequalities in various classes of dynamical systems.

Hyperbolicity of the trace map and spectral properties of the discrete Schrodinger operator with Fibonacci potential.
Speaker:Prof. Anton Gorodetski (University of California, Irvine)
Abstract:Due to M. Casdagli, the trace map of the Fibonacci Hamiltonian is hyperbolic for large values of the coupling constant. In a joint work with D.Damanik we get the same statement for weak coupling, and use these results to relate the properties of the hyperbolic sets and the properties of the spectrum of the Fibonacci Hamiltonian. Since the properties of invariant hyperbolic sets of two dimensional diffeomorphisms are very well studied, we are getting an extensive list of previously unknown properties of the spectrum.
