Holographic Superfluids in the Cave of Winds
Speaker:Daniel Arean (SISSA, Trieste)
Abstract:We investigate holographic superfluids in three and four dimensions finding interesting results about the phase diagram of these systems. We consider various masses of the scalar field whose condensation gives rise to the superfluid phase transition. While in d=3 the basic features of the phase structure do not seem to depend on the mass of the scalar, in d=4 an intricate structure appears. In particular, for some intermediate values of the mass, the system after entering the superfluid phase through a second order phase transition undergoes a first order phase transition between two superfluid states. This is what we call the "Cave of Winds" phase diagram. We also introduce a double-scaling limit which allows us to confirm these results in a (semi-)analytic way.

Negative refraction from holography
Speaker:Guiseppe Policastro (ENS, Paris)
Abstract:I will discuss my recent work 1006.5714 where we showed how relativistic plasmas with a gravitational dual description have unusual optical properties and in particular a negative index of refraction, a property experimentally observed in some special classes of materials.

Extremal Black Holes
Speaker:Chethan Krishnan (SISSA, Trieste)
Abstract:Supersymmetric black holes are extremal, while extremal black holes need not be supersymmetric. Over the last decade there has been significant progress in understanding supersymmetric black holes (in particular in the context of string theory), and it is possible that perhaps the time is ripe for taking a crack at extremal black holes. I describe at a basic level some recent developments in this direction.
