Trimers, molecules and polarons in polarized atomic Fermi gases
Speaker:Meera Parish (Cavendish Laboratory, Cambridge)
Abstract:In this talk, I will consider an atomic Fermi gas in the limit of extreme spin imbalance, where one has a single spin-down impurity atom interacting attractively with a spin-up atomic Fermi gas. By constructing variational wave functions for polarons, molecules and trimers, I will explore the quantum phase transitions between each of these bound states as a function of mass ratio and interaction strength. I will show that the p-wave trimer can in fact be stabilised by the presence of the Fermi sea, much like the situation in the Cooper pair problem. Finally, I will discuss how these transitions might be observed in cold-atom experiments. Lunch Club Overview

High quality pentacene thin films by supersonic molecular beam deposition
Speaker:Petra Rudolf (Zernike Institute of Advanced Materials, University of Groningen, The Netherlands)
Abstract:In recent years, organic transistors have been attracting considerable attention because of their unique natures such as mechanical flexibility, low process costs and easiness of a large-area fabrication. However, due to the lower mobility of organic semiconductors, the performance of organic transistors is in general inferior to that of the inorganic ones. We adopted supersonic molecular beam deposition (SuMBD) to control the quality of thin film growth to investigate the relationship between the structure and electronic/electrical properties of small-molecule high-mobility organic semiconductor thin films, such as pentacene The morphology and crytallinity in the SuMBD grown pentacene first monolayer on the SiO2 surface can in fact be controlled by the kinetic energy and the momentum of the impinging molecules. In this talk, I shall emphasizes the significant differences between pentacene (sub-)monolayer growth by the thermal sublimation and by SuMBD. By using transverse shear microcopy, we demonstrate that islands grown by SuMBD are single crystalline while those deposited by thermal sublimation have a polycrystalline structure. Very large single crystal grains (~ 10microm) can be obtained in pentacene monolayers growth with Ek=6.4 eV. First results on top as well as bottom contact OFETs with SuMBD deposited pentacene films will be discussed.

Neutrinos from neutralino annihilation in the Sun
Speaker:Vassilis Spanos (NCSR Demokritos, Athens )
Abstract:We will discuss the neutrino fluxes from neutralino LSP annihilations inside the Sun, in the context of various supersymmetric models, like the Constrained Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (CMSSM) and the Non-Universal Higgs supersymmetric Model (NUHM). We will show that there are large regions of typical CMSSM and NUHM parameter space where the LSP density inside the Sun is not in equilibrium, so that the annihilation rate may be far below the capture rate. Moreover, we will show that neutrino fluxes depend on the solar model and on the parameters of the spin-dependent and spin-independent neutralino-nucleus scattering. Scanning the cosmologically favoured parts of the parameter space, we will see that the IceCube/DeepCore detector can probe at best only parts of this parameter space.
