Quantized pumping and topological Bose insulators
Speaker:Ehud Altman (Department of Condensed Matter Physics, Weizmann Institute of Sciences, Rehovot)
Abstract:A surprising theoretical insight of the last years has been that band insulators of non-interacting fermions, once presumed to be the most boring states of matter, actually come in a topological variety. Can Mott insulators of bosons harbor analogous hidden structure? I will show that spinless bosons at integer filling in a one dimensional lattice can indeed form two gapped phases that differ only by topology. The structure of the ground states gives rise to fascinating phenomena, including non-local string order, fractional edge states and dissipationless quantized pumping. I will discuss an extension of these ideas to higher dimensional Bose systems as well as possible realizations with ultra-cold atoms in optical lattices.

Pattern Recognition - Theory and Practice
Speaker:Jakob Lettenbichler (HEPHY, Uni Wien)
Abstract:The primary goal of current particle physics experiments is to verify/disprove the Standard Model or to find hints for new theories. To be able to do that, a huge number of events has to be recorded and analyzed. Tracks and properties (momentum, type, location of production point (vertex)...) of particles have to be reconstructed from the recorded data to be able to analyze them for statistical deviations from the predictions of current models. A considerable background generated by several effects and geometrical limitations of the detector complicate the task of track reconstruction. In this talk the first step of pattern recognition, the track finding will be presented and explained using the upcoming Belle II - Silicon Vertex Detector at KEK (Japan) as an example. Several common and newer algorithms for that task will be briefly explained.

Fabrication of nanostructures and their application in plasmonics and spintronics
Speaker:Tomas Sikola (Institute of Physical Engineering and Central European Institute of Technology, Brno University of Technology )
Abstract:In the first part of the talk the methods used in our group for fabrication of nanostructures will be described. Here, mostly the techniques capable of patterning of surfaces and thin films with lateral resolution below 100 nm will be discussed. The main attention will be paid to Focused Ion Beam (FIB) and Local Anodic Oxidation (LAO) carried out by Scanning Probe Microscopy (SPM). In addition to that hybrid methods combining top down and bottom up approaches will be presented. Particularly, the selective growth of ordered arrays of metallic particles of Co, Ga and Au on the surfaces patterned by above mentioned methods will be discussed. The basic surface processes responsible for this specific growth such as adsorption/desorption, diffusion and nucleation will be briefly specified. In the 2nd part of the talk the possible applications of these metallic structures in the field of plasmonics and spintronics will be outlined.

Ist eine 100% Erneuerbare Energieversorgung in einem pan-Europäischen Stromverbund möglich? –Gedanken aus der Angewandten Mathematik
Speaker:Martin O.W. Greiner (Aarhus University)
Abstract:Der Entwurf eines auf 100% Erneuerbarer Energieversorgung basierenden pan-Europäischen Stromverbundes hängt vom Wetter ab.

Fractional vortices in Josephson junctions
Speaker:Reinhold KLEINER (Physikalisches Institut & Center for Collective Quantum Phenomena in LISA, Univ. Tübingen)
Abstract:The macroscopic wave function of a superconductor forces the magnetic flux penetrating the superconductor to be quantized. In the most simple cases of a solid superconductor or a superconducting ring the flux trapped in the ring is the multiple of the flux quantum. Magnetic flux quantization plays a key role in operation of many superconducting devices like Josephon junctions and is a cornerstone of the phenomenon of superconductivity itself. In the last years special Josephson junctions have been created where half-inter vortices or even vortices carrying an arbitrary fraction of the flux quantum can form. Such vortices have very unusual properties and are interesting for applications both in the classical and in the quantum regime. In this talk I will review some properties of fractional vortices and discuss recent experiments.
