Gravitational Anomaly and Transport
Speaker:Eugenio Megias (IFT CSIC/UAM and Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona)
Abstract:Quantum anomalies give rise to new transport phenomena. In particular a magnetic field can induce an anomalous current via the chiral magnetic effect and a vortex in the relativistic fluid can also induce a current via the chiral vortical effect. The related transport coefficients can be calculated via Kubo formulas. In this work we perform a first-principle quantum field theory calculation of the Kubo formula for the anomalous vortical conductivity and show that it receives contributions proportional to the gravitational anomaly coefficient, inducing a dependence proportional to T^2 in the vorticity. The gravitational anomaly gives rise to an anomalous vortical effect even for an uncharged fluid. As a second step of this work, we study an holographic AdS/CFT modelling of the gravitational anomaly by considering a 5-dim Einstein-Maxwell model supplemented with a gauge Chern-Simons and a mixed gauge-gravitational Chern-Simons term. We confirm at strong coupling also the dependence on T^2 induced by the gravitational anomaly. The holographic computation is performed via two different methods: Kubo Formulas and fluid/gravity correspondence.

String dualities, singularities and gauge symmetries
Speaker:Andreas Braun (Vienna University of Technology)
Abstract:After a brief introduction to string theory and string dualities I will present two classic examples in which non-abelian gauge symmetries correspond to a singular compactification manifold on one side of the duality. This leads to an interesting connection between representation theory and topology. Physically, the non-abelian gauge bosons come from branes wrapped on the vanishing cycles. This talk intends to motivate and explain these results in a pedagogic fashion.
