Intersecting branes, Higgs sector, and chirality from N=4 SYM with soft SUSY breaking

Abstract:4-dimensional SU(N) N=4 super Yang-Mills supplemented by a certain cubic and quadratic soft SUSY breaking potential supports a rich set of non-trivial vacua with the geometry of self-intersecting SU(3) branes in 6 extra dimensions. The zero modes on these branes can be interpreted as 3 generation of bosonic (called "Higgs") and chiral fermionic strings connecting the branes at their intersection. After an introduction of the setup, I discuss a new class of exact solutions consisting of branes connected by Higgs condensates, leading to Yukawa couplings between chiral fermionic zero modes. A certain decoupling condition ensures that the backreaction of the Higgs on the branes vanishes, and the resulting physics is that of a spontaneously broken chiral gauge theory on branes with fluxes.

Surface structure and reactivity of perovskite oxynitrides

Abstract:Owing to their reduced band gap compared to pure oxides, perovskite oxynitrides are a promising class of materials for photocatalytic water-splitting electrodes. While the bulk structure of these materials has been investigated both experimentally and theoretically, our knowledge about their surface structure is still very limited, despite that fact that it will dictate potential reaction mechanisms. Based on our density functional theory (DFT) results we determine the anion arrangement in the bulk and at the surface to be different, as it is dominated by bonding and electrostatic considerations respectively. From our calculations we extract the preferred surface orientations and terminations and will discuss them both in terms of the chosen synthesis route and as a function of their environment. Soft gluon resummation for non-global observables in SCET

Abstract:In this talk I will review our framework about non-global logs resummation. Starting from a factorization theorem in SCET, we derive a parton-shower equation for the resummation of non-global logs. We have applied our method to investigate light-jet mass and narrow-broadening event shape resumation. Recently, we have interfaced our shower with aMC@NLO_MG5 event generator to obtain an automated framework to resum the leading logarithm of non-global observables. A universal order parameter for inverse magnetic catalysis

Abstract:I will present the results of a recent paper studying in detail the effect of Inverse Magnetic Catalysis in holographic QCD. After explaining the effect of magnetic field and chemical potential on the chiral phase transition and the effect of (inverse) magnetic catalysis, I will present the main result of the paper: a novel universal order parameter for (inverse) magnetic catalysis.

The upgrade of the ALICE detector

Thermodynamics sheds light on black hole dynamics

Abstract:We propose to unify two a priori distinct aspects of black hole physics: their thermodynamics, and their description as point particles, which is an essential starting point in the post-Newtonian approach to their dynamics. We will find that, when reducing a black hole to a point particle endowed with its specific effective mass, one in fact describes a black hole satisfying the first law of thermodynamics, such that its global charges, and hence its entropy, remain constant without variation. This gives a thermodynamical interpretation of its effective mass, thus opening a promising synergy between black hole thermodynamics and the analytical approaches to the two-body problems in gravity theories. To illustrate this relationship, the Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton (EMD) theory, which contains simple examples of asympotically flat, hairy black hole solutions, will serve as a laboratory.
