| Pauli and the non-Abelian guge theories: between physical intuition and mathematical logic |

| Abstract: | Since the late 60s, non-Abelian gauge theories (the Yang-Mills theories) are a dominant approach in field theory. They have provided the basis of the most significant achievements in this field of modern physics. The history of their development and the mile-stones on that way are rather well known. Less known is the ingenious insight into their geometric beauty that Wolfgang Pauli had gained and the dramatic conflict between physical intuition and mathematical logic which cast shadow over the last year of his life. |
