| Defects, generalized symmetries, and marginal deformations |
| Speaker: | Giovanni Galati (University of Brussels) |
| Abstract: | Extended operators, or defects, play a prominent role in Quantum Field Theory, as they impose additional constraints on the theory and provide powerful tools to model experimental setups such as impurities, interfaces, and boundaries.
In this talk, I will discuss how the generalized global symmetries of a given system can provide non-perturbative constraints on the space of extended defects, both in massive and conformal field theories. Focusing on 2d CFTs, I will argue that the existence of certain exactly marginal defect deformations can be predicted by analyzing subtle ways in which generalized symmetries arise in this setting. Time permitting, I will also explain how some bulk marginal deformations can emerge from the same mechanism. |
