Phase structure of gauge theories on R^3 x S^1
Speaker:Prof. Mike Ogilvie (Washington University in St Louis, USA)
Abstract:Recent work on suitably modified SU(N) gauge theories on R^3 x S^1 shows that confinement can be restored at small circumference in such a way that both semiclassical methods and lattice simulations are valid. The perturbative effective potential indicates the restoration of confinement, and color magnetic monopoles are responsible for the string tension in large Wilson loops. Furthermore, a rich phase structure for gauge theories emerges, including partially confined phases for N>3. Topics to be discussed include the basic physics of the phase structure on R^3 x S^1, application to the large-N limit, the interplay between confinement and chiral symmetry restoration in QCD with adjoint quarks, and the phase structure of Higgs models.

Holographic View on the Quark Gluon Plasma
Speaker:Dominik Steineder (TU Wien)
Abstract:We start by reviewing experimental hints that suggest that the quark gluon plasma, which can be produced in heavy ion collisions taking place at RHIC (Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider) and LHC (Large Hadron Collider) is a strongly coupled liquid rather than a weakly coupled gas. In order to study aspects of this strongly coupled matter we introduce holography also known as gauge gravity duality and calculate the shear viscosity. Finally we discuss the possibilities of studying anisotropic systems within this framework.
