Chiral Spirals and some issues about chiral symmetry at intermediate quark density

Abstract:After a short introduction to QCD and current issues about dense quark matter, I will explain a new state of QCD matter, Quarkyonic matter, which was recently proposed by McLerran and Pisarski. In Quarkyonic matter, quark density is so high that the quarks are released from the baryons, nevertheless excitation modes are confined. After explaining its basic concepts, I will discuss the emergence of the interweaving chiral spirals which spontaneously break the translational, rotational invariance, and the chiral symmetry near the Fermi surface. Its potential relevance to future heavy ion experiments is briefly discussed.

Exclusive Production of Heavy Flavours in Proton-Antiproton Collisions

Abstract:We will discuss the reaction proton-antiproton going into hadron-antihadron for the case that the hadron contains a heavy (c or b) quark. Since the mass of the heavy quark can be taken as a hard scale, QCD perturbation theory becomes applicable at experimentally accessible energies and momentum transfers. We will present the analysis of this kind of reactions in terms of generalized parton distributions. By modeling the generalized parton distributions as an overlap of light-cone wave functions for the incoming proton and the outgoing hadron we are able to make predictions for transition form factors and (polarized) cross sections. We will show numerical results for the production of charmed Lambda-Antilambda pairs. Polarization observables exhibit patterns characteristic for a perturbative approach. Causal horizons and black hole formation in the early Universe

Abstract:We present first a discussion of causal horizons, both for black holes and for the universe, emphasizing the similarities between the two situations. The discussion uses spherical symmetry but does not assume that the black holes are stationary or surrounded by vacuum, or that the universe is homogeneous. We then discuss issues concerned with cosmological structure formation in the early universe, showing results from recent simulations of Primordial Black Hole formation. In this context a key feature is the phenomenon of critical collapse: before the black hole is actually formed, there is a close balance between gravity and pressure which gives rise to an intermediate state well-approximated by a self-similar solution realized only within the past light cone of the forming black hole. The masses of the black holes finally formed follow a scaling law with respect to the amount by which the amplitude of the initial perturbation exceeds a critical threshold.
