Unification of forces in String Theory |
Speaker: | Johanna Knapp (TU Vienna) |
Abstract: | I will introduce the basic concepts of String Theory and show how the
quantized string unifies gauge theory and gravity. I will further
explain why String Theory requires a ten-dimensional space-time and
discuss the concept of compactification of extra dimensions.

The Higgs boson and the quest to falsify the standard model |
Speaker: | Andre David Tinoco Mendes (CERN, CMS) |
Abstract: | The amount of data made available by the LHC in 2011 and 2012 has allowed to firmly establish the existence of a
new particle, found in the searches for a standard model Higgs boson. Results from the ATLAS and CMS collaborations at
the CERN LHC have provided measurements of a few of the properties of this new particle and - up to now - all searches
for deviations of its properties from what is expected for the standard model Higgs boson have turned out negative.
This state of affairs now paves the way for the need of more precise and more accurate measurements and predictions;
any significant deviation could points out the way to go beyond the standard model. We’ll overview the existing corpus
of measurements and searches for deviations and then look at the impending and upcoming challenges in Higgs physics
both from a theoretical as well as from an experimental point of view. |
