Darwin is the Newton of Biology?
Speaker:Evelyn Fox-Keller Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, USA
Abstract:Abstract: It has often been claimed that Darwin’s theory of evolution by natural selection put the lie to Kant’s prediction that there will never be “a Newton of a blade of grass”. I will first argue that, for all Darwin’s achievements, his theory was not able to address Kant’s concerns, and second, re-examine Kant’s predictions in the light of recent developments in biophysics.
