Pizza Seminar - Recent developments in 3d gravity
Speaker:Niklas Johansson (Uppsala University)
Abstract:A consistent quantization of three-dimensional AdS gravity would be of great interest, since this theory contains black holes. Recently, a chiral version of 3D topologically massive gravity was constructed. This theory has many appealing features. Its CFT dual was conjectured to be purely right moving, and therefore holomorphic. In this talk we review this construction, and the sometimes heated debate regarding its properties.

Duration: 60 min
Location:University of Vienna, Boltzmanngasse 5, 5th Floor, Large Seminar Room

On the Use of Topological Degrees of Freedom in Electrodynamics for Radio-Based Space Physics, Astrophysics, and Communications
Speaker:Prof. Bo Thidé (Swedish Institute of Space Physics, Uppsala, Sweden )
Abstract:Using the full symmetry of the electromagnetic field, in particular its angular momentum and other topological degrees of freedom, it is possible to better characterize radio signals received from space, thus facilitating the extraction of the complete information content of the signals and to improve communication protocols. We have shown how this can be accomplished in the radio domain with the use of vector antennas and software-controlled digital radio instrumentation. This allows full control, in software, of field quantities of any order and therefore the technique can be used for fundamental studies of EM orbital angular momentum and related quantities.

Integrating optical devices with atom chips
Speaker:Michael TRUPKE (Imperial College London)
Abstract:Atom chips are powerful tools which allow the cooling, trapping and transport of atoms close to their surface. The aim of the projects described in this talk is to complement these features with the detection and manipulation techniques offered by optical devices. The talk will focus on a scalable, fibre-coupled Fabry-Perot microcavity with which we have demonstrated the detection of atoms and observed cavity-enhanced photon emission. Recent improvements of the experimental apparatus will be presented, together with an outlook on the future of these experiments.
