Diffuse Scattering by molecular compounds |
Speaker: | Reinhard B. Neder (University Erlangen, Inst. physics of cond. mat.) |
Abstract: | Quite often crystal structures that consist of molecular units experience disorder. This commonly occurs if slightly different molecules occupy the same site in the unit cell. The information content of the Bragg reflections is limited to knowledge of the average crystal struc-ture and thus these different molecules appear projected on top of each other. The analysis of the diffuse scattering between the Bragg reflections allows determining the correlations and local distribution of these molecules.Since the diffuse scattering is the product of two components, the analysis is not straightfor-ward. The first component is the difference between the scattering functions of the two(or more) molecule types. The second is the diffuse scattering that results from the actual distributions of the molecule throughout the crystal. In this presentation, new techniques to unravel these two components. |
