Quantum communication with quantum memory
Speaker:Shuai CHEN (Universität Heidelberg)
Abstract:Atomic ensembles can be used as quantum memory to store the state of photon in a collective single spin excitation. Using different spatial modes one can create atom-photon entanglement where the atomic state can be stored in a quantum memory for more than 20 microseconds. With such an atom-photon entanglement source, the teleportation from a photonic qubit to an atomic qubit is achieved. Furthermore two remote atomic ensembles are entangled via the interference of two photons following an improved "Briegel type" swapping protocol (Bo Zhao et. al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 98, 240502 (2007)). These achievements provide the basic elements for the experimental realization of quantum repeater and new techniques for the long distance quantum communication.
