Vienna Theory Lunch Club - Physics analysis at Belle |
Speaker: | Wolfgang Dungel (HEPHY) |
Abstract: | The aim of physics analysis is to match the predictions of theory with experimental results. At the collider experiment Belle in Tsukuba, Japan, the main focus lies in the investigation of the Cabbibo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix, which contains the only source of CP-violation within the standard model. This talk aims at presenting the Belle experiment and the basic aims and pitfalls in analyzing the data of particle physics experiments in a very general way. Afterwards, a more detailed view of one specific analysis will be given, which centers on the investigation of 'B0-> D* l nu' decays.

Photoionization of highly charged ions in an electron beam ion trap |
Speaker: | Dipl.-Ing. Martin Simon (Max-Planck-Institut für Kernphysik, Heidelberg/D) |
Abstract: | This talk will present photoionization experiments performed with an EBIT (electron beam ion trap) at the synchrotron in Berlin (BESSY). An EBIT is a device which can produce highly charged ions by successive electron impact ionization. These ions are subsequently trapped by the space charge of the electron beam. After a general introduction to EBIT physics and some technical details about the transportable 1.5 tons FLASH-EBIT from Heidelberg experiments combining strong photon beams and highly charged ions in an EBIT will be described. Special focus will be given to the recently successful photoionization measurements of N3+ at BESSY. Using this new method it will be possible to investigate the photoionization of astrophysically relevant highly charged ions like Fe16+ for the first time. |
