Unambiguous discrimination of two mixed quantum states |
Speaker: | Prof. Dagmar Bruß (Heinrich Heine Universität, Düsseldorf) |
Abstract: | Distinguishing two non-orthogonal states in an optimal way is a fundamental problem in quantum information theory. If one is not allowed to make an error, this task is called unambiguous state discrimination (USD). A USD measurement is optimal when it minimises the probability of an inconclusive outcome. The optimal solution of USD for two mixed states is not (yet?) analytically known.
We show that the optimal measurement is unique, and present a general strategy to find the optimal solution. For the lowest-dimensional non-trivial case (i.e. d = 4) our approach allows to determine the optimal solution in a constructive way, and to understand the properties of its different regimes.

Nanotechnology with nanotubes: From thermal motor to electron manipulation |
Speaker: | Adrian Bachtold (CIN2 (CSIC-ICN), Campus UAB, Bellaterra, Spain) |
Abstract: | Carbon nanotubes have unique mechanical and electrical properties that can be exploited in various nanoscale devices. Because carbon nanotubes are exceptionally robust mechanically and chemically inert, they have attracted considerable interest as nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS). Besides, nanotubes combine ultrasmall cross section and the property that their conducting electrons are located at the tube surface. This makes nanotubes outstanding sensors of, e.g., charges, chemical gas or biological probes. In this talk, I will review some of our group's recent results on this remarkable material, including studies of high-frequency mechanical nanotube resonators, the development of thermal motors in which the motion depends on the arrangement of the atoms in the nanotube, and the study of the spectrum properties of molecular systems by counting electrons using a nanotube field-effect transistor. |

Vienna Theory Lunch Club - Black Hole Thermodynamics à la Information Geometry |
Speaker: | Narit Pidokrajt (Stockholm University) |
Abstract: | In this talk we will discuss the use of information (a.k.a. Ruppeiner) geometry to understand thermodynamics of various black holes e.g. 2D dilaton black holes, Myers-Perry black holes in higher dimensions among others. It has been known that the geometrical theory of thermodynamics provides an alternative and elegant route to obtain insight into thermodynamics through Riemannian geometry. Its power is due to the fact that the information metric together with its associated curvature and signature encodes many aspects of thermodynamics consistent with the known results in the literature. Since we do not yet have a settled statistical mechanics of black holes, the information geometry of black hole thermodynamics also paves a road to a (possibly) new way of understanding of the microscopic degrees of freedom of the black holes. There are many potential applications of this geometric method as there are emerging black objects in higher dimensions and black hole analogs which require new perspectives in order to better understand them.
