Quantum Marbles - Controlling neutral atoms at every step |
Speaker: | Dieter Meschede (Institut für Angewandte Physik, Universität Bonn) |
Abstract: | "How often can atoms atoms interfere with themselves?"
Quantum gases confined by an optical lattices have recently received much attention as simulators for quantum many-particle systems, and they are advertised as important tools for quantum information science. In an alternative "bottom-up" approach small interacting quantum systems can be created with neutral atoms which resembles a bit children playing with microscopic marbles. In this lecture I will present our recent experimental advances where we have taken atomic marbles to the full quantum regime, i.e. to the observation of atomic matter wave interferences at the single atom level. For instance, we have realized the quantum analogue of Brownian motion, the quantum walk, a concept of relevance in quantum information science. New methods to cool single atoms to the motional ground state also open the potential for the creation of degenerate quantum states at the level of few atoms only.

Vienna Theory Lunch Club - What properties should an entanglement measure for multipartite quantum systems have? |
Speaker: | Marcus Huber (Uni Wien) |
Abstract: | Entanglement is a key feature in quantum information theory and a resource for many applications. However little is known about entanglement in higher dimensional systems, especially when many particles are involved. This talk will try to give a brief insight into the nature of entanglement, motivate the basic properties of entanglement measures and present two recent examples.

Comprehensive TEM nano-analytics in steels |
Speaker: | Dr. Mihaela Albu ( Institute for Electron Microscopy) |
Abstract: | Different secondary precipitates in 9-12 % chromium rich steels were characterized in transmission electron microscopes (TEM) by using integrated spectroscopic techniques such as high resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) and X-ray spectroscopy. These data combined with energy filtered TEM, high resolution TEM and some off line methods like phase diagrams and near edge fine structure of interstitial elements (B, C, N, O) may help to understand the nucleation of different phases. All these methods have been used to identify different complex nitride phases like MN (VN), M2N (Cr2N) and modified Z-phases (CrVN). MN particles having vanadium rich cores with very thin chromium rich shells structures have been observed in very early formed modified Z phases. Elemental quantification of EEL spectra suggests that a transformation of both MN and M2N into modified Z phase despite of their different crystallographic structure it may be possible if a diffusion of the nitrogen is accounted. |
