| Abstract: | During the weekend of November 7-8, 2009, CMS saw the first signal this year from 450 GeV protons that were dumped into a collimator, right after they had passed through three octants of the LHC accelerator. I take this opportunity to briefly review the history of the LHC from a user's perspective. The current status of the machine is then presented. Finally, I will present new techniques for the search for physics beyond the Standard Model.
