Entanglement Polytopes and Other Facets of the Quantum Marginal Problem |

Abstract: | An oft-repeated piece of wisdom says that for entangled quantum states, "the whole is greater than the sum of its parts". In other words: one expects that little information about the global state is accessible from single-particle measurements. We challenge this intuition by showing that local information alone can serve as a powerful witness to multi-particle entanglement. Each of our entanglement classes is characterized by a finite set of "Bell inequalities" on the eigenvalues of the local density operators. These inequalities cut out a constellation of convex polytopes, which geometrically encodes all locally available information about global entanglement. I will sketch possible experimental implementations, as well as the employed mathematical methods which range from classical invariant theory to asymptotic representation theory. Time permitting, I will mention related new result |

Adsorption of Molecules on Cobalt Oxide Thin Films |

Abstract: | Transition metal oxides are of great interest for a variety of reasons. From a Physicist's point of view, the interplay between delocalized and localized electrons gives rise to a plethora of fascinating properties, mostly connected with the magnetic properties of the materials. I will discuss complexity of the interplay between structural and magnetic respectively electronic properties of a particular example of a thin bi-layer cobalt oxide film on Ir(100). From a Chemist's point of view oxide surfaces play an important role in catalysis not only as inert supports of catalytically active agents but also as a catalyst themselves. Our understanding of the interaction of molecules with such oxide surfaces lags behind the insight that was generated on the interaction of molecules with metal surfaces. Smooth optimal control of nitrogen-vacancy centers |

Abstract: | We present pulse shaping techniques that allow us to control ensembles of NV centers with external time-dependent fields that contain only a few predefined frequency components. By doing this, we respond to experimental challenges in implementing the broad band pulses typically generated with existing optimal control algorithms like GRAPE [1]. With our approach we target the design of control pulses for the manipulation of ensembles of NV centers and the interaction of such ensembles with electro-magnetic resonators [2, 3]. We construct high fidelity pulses for ensembles with broadly distributed resonance frequencies and coupling strengths to the control field.
