The Dark Side of Star Formation: Witnessing the Growth of Galaxies in the Early Universe |
Speaker: | Dr. Helmut Dannerbauer (University of Vienna, Department of Astrophysics) |
Abstract: | About half of the star formation activity in the universe is obscured by dust. This activity reached its peak ten billion years ago. Therefore, in order to understand galaxy formation it is crucial to obtain sensitive observations of two main components of galaxies: dust and molecular gas. These components constrain the on-going star formation or black hole activity and the future potential of the galaxy to grow. Understanding the growth of ensemble of galaxies in the distant universe is one of the primary goals of observations in the far-infrared and (sub)millimeter wavelength regime. To shed light on these obscure topics, I will present our on-going observations of dust and molecular gas with a number of different far-infrared and (sub)millimeter facilities such as Herschel or ALMA of galaxies in the distant universe. |

Higher Spins Coupled to Scalars |
Speaker: | Pan Kessel (MPI Potsdam) |
Abstract: | This talk has two parts. In the first one I will try to explain what three dimensional Vasiliev theory is good for and discuss some recent results obtained from it. In this part I will not dive into the technical details of Vasiliev theory but focus on its physical implications. In the second part I will sketch how Vasiliev theory works in a (hopefully) pedagogical manner.
