Exploring the molecule distributions with photon statistics in scanning far-field fluorescence microscopy |

Abstract: | Fluorescence microscopy provides the information of not only the position but also the local abundance of the molecules. Although the molecular brightness varies due to the heterogeneity of local environment, the molecular abundance is usually obtained by dividing the measured fluorescence intensity by that of single emitters assuming constant molecular brightness throughout the whole sample. Here we obtain the distribution of the molecules by exploiting the detected photon statistics of the emitters. The quantum nature of the photon emission from a single emitter allows no more than one photon at a time. It is not only the identity of the existence of single emitters, but also encodes the number of the emitters in the photon statistics especially in the simultaneous detected multiple photons or the coincidence photons. 25 years of R&D on inorganic scintillator and their applications in the crystal clear collaboration |

Abstract: | The Crystal Clear Collaboration (CCC) has been created in 1991 in the frame of the DRDC program at CERN. Its initial goal was to identify the most suitable inorganic scintillators as candidates for an electromagnetic calorimeter at the future Large Hadron Collider. The R&D carried out led to the choice of PbWO4 as material for the electromagnetic calorimeter of the CMS detector.
Moreover, for 25 years the Crystal Clear Collaboration has also carried out intense R&D on inorganic scintillating materials for novel ionizing radiation detectors for use in high-energy physics, medical imaging and industrial applications. Such R&D covers generic activities such as the understanding of the scintillation mechanism, to the conceptual design, test, implementation and integration of large detector systems. The main results achieved by the CCC and the current domains of activities will be presented. |

Spin clocks: Investigation of fundamental symmetries in nature |

Abstract: | Symmetries and conservation laws determine the interactions between particles and the structures in which matter organizes itself. Some of the most fundamental symmetries in physics are the space-time symmetries of Lorentz transformations - where the laws of physics are unchanged under boosts and rotations - and CPT - the combination of charge conjugation (C), parity inversion (P) and time reversal (T). Precision measurements using “atomic clocks” have flourished in recent years as attempts to find cracks in the well established Standard Model of particle physics by searching for tiny violations of empirical symmetry laws. Polarized 3He and 129Xe are ideally suited for pushing the limits of sensitivity due to the extraordinarily long phase-coherence time of their precessing spins of about 100h.
