Dynamics of ultracold interacting quantum gases |

Abstract: | Atomic gases cooled to Nanokelvin temperatures are a new exciting tool to
study a broad range of quantum phenomena. In particular, an outstanding and rapid control over the fundamental parameters, such as interaction strength, spin composition, and dimensionality allows to realize and observe many different situations far from equilibrium. In my talk, I will address the question of the dynamics of ultracold gases after an external change of parameters and the influence of a coupling to an environment. I will present results obtained by a variety of theoretical methods including MPS based algorithms.

A Pfaffian formula for monomer-dimer partition functions |

Abstract: | The monomer-dimer covering problem shows up in several areas of
physics and other fields. While the partition function of the pure dimer
covering problem on planar lattices was solved ages ago by Kasteleyn and
Fisher-Temperley in terms of Paffians (whose squares are easily computable
determinants), the inclusion of monomers (i.e., vertices uncovered by
dimers) is an intractable problem. Together with Alessandro Giuliani
and Ian Jauslin we have succeeded in utilizing an ancient theorem*
to write the partition function of a restricted monomer-dimer problem
as a Pfaffian. This is the model in which monomers are allowed on the
boundary vertices of an arbitrary planar graph. |

Ultrathin ZrO2: surface structure is decisive for oxide properties |

Abstract: | Although zirconia (ZrO2) finds a wide range of applications in engineering, catalysis, microelectronics and solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs), atomic-level studies of its surface structure are difficult due to its insulating nature, related to its high band gap (Eg ≈ 5 eV). In order to overcome this limitation, ultrathin zirconia films were grown by oxidation of Zr-based alloys (Pt3Zr [1] and Pd3Zr [2]), and the structure of these films was studied by STM. In this talk, I will present atomically resolved STM measurements of the films and the adsorption of H2O and atomic H as well as deposition of metals (Ag, Au, Pd, Ni, Fe) at these surfaces. Combined studies by STM and DFT reveals that the surface structure of the ultrathin oxide is a decisive factor that determines the interaction of the oxide with the molecules and the metals.

Euclidean-Signature Semi-Classical Methods for Quantum Cosmology |

Abstract: | We show how certain microlocal analysis methods, already well-developed for the study
of conventional Schrödinger eigenvalue problems, can be extended to apply to the (mini-superspace) Wheeler-DeWitt equation for the quantized Bianchi IX (or ‘Mixmaster’) cosmological model. We use the methods to construct smooth, globally defined asymptotic expansions, for both ‘ground’ and ‘excited state’ wave functions, on the Mixmaster mini-superspace. A crucial step in this extension involves handling the fact that, for spatially closed universe models, all of the relevant eigenvalues to the Wheeler-DeWitt operator must vanish identically-̶̶̶̶-̶ a sharp contrast to the situation normally arising for Schrödinger operators. |

Single cell irradiation using tapered glass capillaries: The RIKEN microbeam setup |

Abstract: | The interaction of highly charged ions with single cells is an important topic of radiation biology. Especially focused ion beams down to few micrometer diameter, which enables the research of radiation effects on a cellular basis, has been proven to be extremely useful. This lead to an increasing number of microbeamlines devoted for biological research with the capability of delivering a defined number of ions down to sub-micrometer resolution into living cells.
At our micro-irradiation setup at RIKEN, we use tapered glass capillaries with a thin end window for applying a microbeam of short range ions into liquid medium. Furthermore, the ions can be counted using dedicated capillaries, thus doses down to a single proton can be precisely set. The unique design of our setup allows us to inject ions into living...
