Atomically Precise Nanoscale Contacts
|
Speaker: | Paul S. Weiss (California NanoSystems Institute and Departments of Chemistry & Biochemistry and Materials Science & Engineering, UCLA, Los Angeles/CA) |
Abstract: | The physical, electronic, mechanical, and chemical connections that materials make to one another and to the outside world are critical. Just as the properties and applications of conventional semiconductor devices depend on these contacts, so do nanomaterials, many nanoscale measurements, and devices of the future. We discuss the important roles that these contacts can play in preserving key transport and other properties. Initial nanoscale connections and measurements guide the path to future opportunities and challenges ahead. Band alignment and minimally disruptive connections are both targets and can be characterized in both experiment and theory.
I discuss our initial forays into this area in a number of materials systems.

The response of semi-holographic non-Fermi liquids |
Speaker: | Giuseppe Policastro (ENS Paris) |
Abstract: | In recent years, the holographic correspondence has been used in many contexts
to explore properties of strongly coupled systems that are hard to obtain
by conventional methods. One of these areas is that of high-T superconductors.
It is believed that the normal (non-superconducting) phase in these
systems shows evidence of non-Fermi liquid behavior.
Motivated by these considerations, I will present some recent progress
in understanding the properties of certain models of interacting
non-Fermi liquids obtained via a semi-holographic construction. I will
discuss the similarities and difference with the ordinary Fermi
liquids and the phenomenological applications.

Associated Strangeness Production in Proton-Proton Interactions |
Speaker: | Dr. Florian Hauenstein (Forschungszentrum Jülich) |
Abstract: | The associated strangeness production in pp interactions has been studied with the COSY-TOF detector in the reaction pp → pK+Λ close to threshold. The underlying reaction mechanisms are not fully understood since perturbative QCD calculations can not be applied at this energy regime. What has been determined so far is a strong influence of N* resonances in the reaction, a strong pΛ final state interaction and a NΣ - pΛ channel coupling which leads to an cusp effect in the pΛ invariant mass spectrum. The latest measurements at COSY-TOF have been carried out with a polarized proton beam. This allows also the determination of polarization observables such as the spin transfer of the beam to the Λ or the analyzing power of the final state particles. These polarization observables could improve the understanding ... [ full abstract here: https://indico.smi.oeaw.ac.at/event/153 ] |

Geometry of the Hilbert space for three fermions with six single-particle states |
Speaker: | Alex Gottlieb (WPI, Vienna) |
Abstract: | im Rahmen des Seminars in Geometric Analysis and Physics
(GAP Seminar): The Hilbert space for a single particle with six basic quantum states is the standard 6-
dimensional complex space V, and the Hilbert space for a system of three fermions with six single-
particle states is the (alternating) tensor product space V^V^V, a 20-dimensional space. The
simplest vectors in V^V^V are "decomposable" wedge products of three vectors from V. Every
vector in V^V^V can be written as a sum of three decomposables, and most can be written as a
sum of just two. Every vector in V^V^V can be written -- in various ways -- as a linear combinati -
on of at most five decomposable wedge products of vectors drawn from a single orthonormal basis
of V. These multilinear algebraic properties of vectors in V^V^V are related to the geometry
of that space. |
