Determining the Quantum Expectation Value by Measuring a Single Photon (and other recent applications of weak measurements) |
Speaker: | Eliahu Cohen (University of Bristol) |
Abstract: | Quantum mechanics exhibits several peculiar properties, differentiating it from classical mechanics. One of the most intriguing is that variables might not have definite values. A complete quantum description provides only probabilities for obtaining various eigenvalues of a quantum variable. The eigenvalues and corresponding probabilities specify the expectation value of a physical observable, but they are known to be statistical properties of large ensembles. In contrast to this paradigm, we demonstrate a unique method allowing to measure the expectation value of a physical variable on a single particle, namely, the polarization of a single protected photon. This is the first realization of quantum protective measurements [1,2], which are based on a combination of weak measurements and the quantum Zeno effect. Before discussing these issues, I will review the notion of weak measurement |

CoQuS colloquium - Seminar Talk by Dmitry Budker |
Speaker: | Dmitry Budker (Universität Wien) |
Abstract: | This talk will cover some recent applications of magnetometers, including nuclear magnetic resonance without magnets (!) as well other magnetometer adventures including measuring magnetic fields in the mesosphere using sodium laser guide stars and searching for ultralight cosmic particles that may be part of the Dark Matter (one of the major embarrassments of modern science for its failure to determine what Dark Matter consists of after many years of consorted efforts). |

Four-dimensional Vasiliev Theory: An Introduction |
Speaker: | Pan Kessel (MPI für Gravitationsphysik Potsdam) |
Abstract: | im Rahmen des Seminars für Mathematische Physik: In this talk, I will give a lightning introduction to four-dimensional Vasiliev Theory
which is a non-linear field theory containing massless gauge fields with spin greater
than 2. I will review its basic formulation and sketch its applications in the context of
AdS/CFT.

Many body physics using tensor networks |
Speaker: | Frank Verstraete (Vienna) |
Abstract: | Joint Theoretical Physics Seminar: We will describe how the theory of entanglement provides a novel language for describing
quantum many body systems. We will demonstrate how the ensuing quantum tensor n
etworks allow for the classification of topological quantum phases of matter.
