Progress on studies of the most essential kaonic nucleus K-pp |

Abstract: | In hadron physics and strange nuclear physics, nuclear systems with antikaon (Kbar meson = (K–, K0bar), involving a strange quark) have been one of hot topics. The attraction between a Kbar meson and a nucleon (N) is so strong to form a quasi-bound state which corresponds to an excited hyperon Λ(1405). Due to such a strong Kbar-N attraction, nuclear systems with antikaons, namely kaonic nuclei, are expected to have several interesting properties. In particular, possible formation of a dense state seems the most interesting, because it is related to the partial restoration of the chiral symmetry which is an important theme that hadron physicists have been investigating for a long time.

On falling into black holes |

Abstract: | The celebrated "black hole" spacetimes of Schwarzschild and Kerr play
a central role in our current understanding of Einstein's general
theory of relativity. Are these spacetimes stable, however,
as solutions to the Einstein vacuum equations, in their exterior
region? And what fate awaits physical observers who
enter inside a "generic" black hole? It turns out that
these two questions are intimately related and the answer
to the second may be more disturbing than previously thought.
This talk will try to explain how so. |
