Abstract: | Three projects at the Joint Quantum Institute: Francium, Cavity QED, and
Nanofibers
I will report on recent developments on three projects:
1) Francium spectroscopy where we perform precision spectroscopy on francium to carry out experiments to understand better the weak interaction,
2) Cavity QED as a tool to study questions on quantum speed and its control that are relevant in statistical mechanics and quantum information
3) Optical nanofibers where we have been able to measure the modification of the atomic lifetime of Rb atoms due to collective effects.

A composite model for B decay anomalies and dark matter |

Abstract: | The LHCb experiment has found tentative evidence for the breakdown of lepton flavor universality in decays of neutral B mesons to K (or K^*)
plus leptons. Exchange of a heavy leptoquark is one way to explain the
observations. I present a simple model where the leptoquark, along with
heavy quark and lepton partners and a TeV-scale dark matter candidate,
arise from strong interactions of a new SU(N) confining gauge interaction.
The model predicts other flavor-changing rare processes, direct detection
of the dark matter, and production of the heavy states at LHC. It can
also explain the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon if the new
confinement scale is ~100 GeV. |

Abstract: | A few years ago Strominger argued that the BMS4 algebra, usually defined at
null infinity, should be regarded as a true symmetry of gravitational evolution
of asymptotically flat space-times. This implies the existence of an infinite tower
of conserved quantities and brings new insight to various problems like gravitational
scattering or black-holes evaporation. In this talk, I will show how BMS4 algebra arises as a symmetry at spatial infinity.

New Eyes for Nanocatalysis: Atomic Scale Investigations of TiO2 Chemistry |

Abstract: | The arrangement of atoms on a catalyst surface controls its chemical reactivity. As a result, nanocatalysts with different shapes — and thus different surfaces — often have markedly different reactivities, which has led to the emergence of shape-controlled chemistry. Nevertheless, predicting which faces, and thus which shapes, will be the most reactive under operating conditions has been hindered by our inability to image these tiny crystals at the atomic scale. I will show that shape-controlled crystal growth techniques can be used to produce highly aligned anatase TiO2 nanocrystals that can be studied at the atomic-scale with scanning tunneling microscopy and a panoply of other techniques. Despite being synthesized in solution, the surfaces of the nanocrystals are very clean and passivated by a protecting monolayer.
