Single spins in self-assembled quantum dots
Speaker:Richard J. Warburton (Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh)
Abstract:In the search for a single, coherent quantum state in a semiconductor, spin is a natural choice as spin interacts only indirectly with the usual source of dephasing, the phonons. Experiments will be presented first on a single electron confined to a quantum dot showing how the electron spin dephasing via the phonons is highly suppressed. However, the experiments show that fixing one problem creates another: the electron spin rapidly loses its coherence via an interaction with the nuclear spins in the quantum dot. In an attempt to bypass this problem, experiments will be presented also on a single hole spin. Remarkably, with unprepared nuclear spins, the experiments demonstrate that a hole spin is much more coherent than an electron spin. Further progress in this field demands new levels of experimental control. Recent progress in GHz bandwidth switching and microcavity development will be mentioned.
