Research at the Drop Tower Bremen: From the Pioneer Anomaly to testing fundamental physics with cold atoms |
Speaker: | Claus LÄMMERZAHL (ZARM, University of Bremen) |
Abstract: | The short introduction of the talk describes the scope of the research carried through at the Drop Tower in Bremen. It ranges from satellite dynamics and technology, over experimental gravitation to applied and theoretical gravitation. In the present talk the resolution of the Pioneer anomaly and our research concerning the test of the Universality of Free Fall with ultracold atoms will be highlighted.
The Pioneer Anomaly describes an unmodelled acceleration of approx. 10
nm/s^2 of the two Pioneer spacecraft Pioneer 10 and Pioneer 11 launched in 1974 and 1974. This effect has been recognized after the last flyby of the Pioneer spacecraft at Jupiter and Saturn which turned them into a Solar system escape orbit. All kind of error analysis was not able to identify a cause of this effect within standard physics. Also a wide range of modified gravitational theories did not lead to a satisfactory answer. Finally, it turned out that the issue of thermal radiation has not been analyzed rigorously enough. Therefore we started a project for the complete thermal analysis of the Pioneer spacecraft. This finally led to the explanation of the Pioneer Anomaly in terms of anisotropic thermal radiation.
Interferometry with cold atoms have the potential of providing high precision instruments for practical applications as well as for fundamental tests. The attempts towards a new test of the Universality of Free Fall with ultracold atoms will be described as well as issues related to the theoretical interpretation of the outcome of such experiments. The main issues are whether the experimental results can be independent of the mass of the quantum system, or how inertial and gravitational mass enter the experimental results, and how to combine the local framework of General Relativity with the nonlocal quantum systems. |
