What is quantum field theory? A quantum information theorist’s perspective |

Abstract: | There has been in a fruitful interplay of ideas between quantum information theory and high energy physics, especially in the context of quantum simulation, the AdS/CFT correspondence, and the black hole information loss paradox. However, a core difficulty faced by quantum information theorists – who are usually concerned with qubits – interested in these emergent and vibrant areas is the necessity of dealing with quantum fields. The primary purpose of this talk is to lower the entry barrier for quantum information theorists to work on these topics by explaining what, in a quantum information friendly way, a quantum field state actually is. I'll describe the Wilsonian formulation of quantum field theory as an effective theory and explain how this leads naturally to a definition, independent of lagrangians, of quantum field states which is better adapted to, e.g., tensor networks......... |

Beyond infrared-safe jet observables |

Abstract: | im Rahmen des Teilchenphysikseminars: Many LHC analyses involve jets,
which are collimated sprays of energetic hadrons. The substructure of
jets provides an important tool in the search for physics beyond the
Standard Model. I will discuss several jet Observables that are not
infrared and collinear safe, causing the usual partonic calculations to
break down. Specifically, I will consider the electric charge of a jet,
the ratio of two angularities of a jet, generalized jet angularities
and the out-of-jet hadron multiplicity. I will describe how to
calculate these observables and discuss their phenomenological impact.

Progress in the development of SiPMs |

Abstract: | Silicon PhotoMultipliers (SiPMs) render completely new designs of experiments possible and allows the construction of detectors with largely improved performance for high energy physics but as well in other fields like medical imaging. SiPMs are compact, insensitive to magnetic fields, they have a high detection efficiency and a very fast response. But they show some unwanted effects (e.g. crosstalk and afterpulses). I will describe the measures the producers have taken recently to minimize these bothersome properties. And I will report on some new investigations which give some insight on the dynamics of SiPMs and will help to improve the devices. |
