Time-dependent density functional theory for interactions of highly-intense ultra-short laser pulses with solids

Abstract:We have been developing a method to investigate nonlinear laser-solid interactions based on the time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT). In the method, we combine the TDDFT and the Maxwell’s equations in order to simultaneously describe both microscopic electron dynamics and macroscopic propagation of electromagnetic fields. The simultaneous description is necessary to describe laser-solid interactions in the strongly nonlinear regime. We have applied the method to femtosecond laser-induced damage phenomena, and evaluated spatial distribution of transferred energy from laser to solids immediately after the laser-irradiation. By using the transferred energy distribution, we simply estimated laser-damage-threshold and ablation-depth. Our estimations show fair agreement with recent experimental data.
