Abstract: | Abstract: Since light is heavily attenuated in sea water, most of the world oceans are a dark place. In contrast, sound can travel more freely and in some cases propagate over distances of thousands of miles across the sea. Life has adapted to these circumstances: almost all ocean animals either sense, communicate, navigate, detect prey, or even kill acoustically. We have developed some of these capabilities over the last two centuries. Underwater acoustics is a rapidly growing field spanning from pure theoretical research to the development of technologies that support all our sea-going efforts, from ocean explorations to warfare.
During this seminar we will highlight, from a physics perspective, some fascinating sounds of the sea, theoretical links between particle physics and underwater acoustics, and discuss some aspects of current research related to acoustic remote sensing of fish schools.
