Physical consequences of non-flat spacetime for topological states of matter |
Speaker: | Filippo Fecit (TU Wien and Universita di Genova) |
Abstract: | It is known that topological states of matter, such as Hall states and topological insulators, can be described by field theories (topological and non-topological) with boundaries. The essential physical feature of these edge states is the existence of chiral bosons. Recently, chiral edge bosons with time-dependent, and therefore accelerated, velocities have been observed in certain materials and under certain circumstances. These cannot be explained by edge field theories built on flat spacetimes. The aim of this work is to show that accelerated chiral bosons can be obtained by considering edge field theories built on curved spacetimes. focusing in particular on the abelian BF theory in 2+1 dimensions. |
