Solitons, nonlinear evolution equations and inverse scattering |

Abstract: | Nonlinear evolution equations play a pivotal role in many areas of physics ranging from fluid dynamics, plasma physics, nonlinear optics, quantum field theory, to approximative descriptions of the many-body quantum problem such as the Gross-Pitaevskii equation, the time-dependent Hartree Fock equations, or time-dependent density functional theory. In some cases nonlinear evolution equations are exactly solvable via the inverse scattering transform - a fact closely related to the existence of solitons. In this talk a short introduction to the inverse scattering transform will be given. As an example we will discuss the Korteweg-de Vries equation which describes propagation of water waves. |

Scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy of LaAlO3/SrTiO3 heterostructures |

Abstract: | We report on the initial growth nature of sub-unit cell (UC) SrTiO3 (STO) and LaAlO3 (LAO) films formed on top of STO(001)-(root13×root13)-R33.7º substrate surfaces, using a scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS) combined with pulsed laser deposition (PLD).
The STM/STS imaging of sub-UC LAO islands reveals that a TiOx layer of the SrTiO3 substrate has transferred to the topmost surface of the LaAlO3 layer, indicating that the TiOx layer can be viewed as a graphene-like one unit-cell TiOx sheet. This structure can be regarded as a new oxide nano material.
Further, we found that the surface structures affects electron transport properties at LAO/STO interfaces.
These findings on the atomic-scale nature of perovskite growth lead to preparation of higher-quality thin films and surfaces/interfaces exhibiting novel electronic and magnetic properties.

PANDA at FAIR: Status and Physics Prospects |

Abstract: | Though strong interaction has been under study for a long time, recent findings of new and unexpected resonances with unresolved properties show that the hadron spectrum is not yet completely understood. This is underlined by the ongoing discussion on multi-quark states, and other exotic states with gluonic degrees of freedom.
The PANDA experiment, one of the biggest enterprises at the FAIR facility, aims at exploring this field thanks to the gluon rich environment in antiproton annihilations that allow to access many quantum numbers, and foresees a much higher resolution in production experiments. A wide acceptance apparatus able to detect both charged and neutral particles combined with the high quality beam of the accelerator will enable a clean identification even of rare decay channels. In this talk, physics program of PANDA together with the PANDA apparatus is discussed. |

Superconducting vortex lattice for ultracold neutrons |

Abstract: | In this talk I will present a proposal to use a nanoengineered vortex array in a thin-film type-II superconductor as a magnetic lattice for ultracold atoms. This proposal addresses several of the key questions in the development of atomic quantum simulators. By trapping atoms close to the surface, tools of nanofabrication and structuring of lattices on the scale of few tens of nanometers become available with a corresponding benefit in energy scales and temperature requirements. This can be combined with the possibility of magnetic single site addressing and manipulation together with a favorable scaling of superconducting surface-induced decoherence. |
