From trajectories to models: data-driven approaches to decipher the dynamics of living systems
Speaker:Pierre Ronceray (Aix-Marseille University)
Abstract: Stochastic differential equations are often used to model the dynamics of living systems, from Brownian motion at the molecular scale to the dynamics of cells and animals. How does one learn such models from experimental data? This task faces multiple challenges, from information-theoretical limitations to practical considerations. I will present a recent and ongoing effort to develop new methods to reconstruct such stochastic dynamical models from experimental data, with a focus on robustness and data efficiency. These methods provide a generic means to quantify complex behavior and unfold the underlying mechanisms of an apparently erratic trajectory.

Black Hole Quantum Matter
Speaker:Karl Landsteiner (Univ. Autonoma Madrid)
Abstract:Topological quantum matter is characterised by a plethora of exotic transport phenomena such as the Hall, thermal Hall, Chiral Magnetic and Vortical effects and many more. In the language of quantum field theory all of them are intimately related to chiral anomalies. I propose a unified theory of these phenomena through Chern-Simons actions on Black Hole geometries. Trivial Pursuits
Speaker:Paul Romatschke (U. Colorado, Boulder)
Abstract:Traditionally, scalar ϕ4 theory in four dimensions is thought to be quantum trivial in the continuum. This tradition is apparently well grounded both in physics arguments and mathematical proofs. Digging into the proofs one finds that they do not actually cover all physically meaningful situations, in particular the case of multi-component fields and non-polynomial action. Instead, one finds a non-trivial interacting theory that has two phases, bound states and non-trivial scattering amplitudes in the limit of many components. This has potentially broad implications, both for the foundations of quantum field theory as well as for the experimentally accessible Higgs sector of the Standard Model.
